Legalization is the only responsible answer. This eliminates the power and wealth of organized crime and government monitored institutions can build, into the price of drugs, treatment for addicts. This would also ensure the proper quality and dosage so that people don’t sniff, inject, free base, or smoke poison.
The danger of drugs is real, but wildly over exaggerated. In the causes of death, marijuana doesn’t even make the list because it is literally impossible to overdose. This has been tested in the lab. Dogs, chimpanzees, and rats dosed with the equivalent of 100lbs of cannabis simply take a nap.
More people abuse and die from prescription drugs from legitimate sources. Not only do alcohol, cigarettes, fast food, car accidents, drownings, suicides, violence, accidental poisonings, and bee stings kill more people than illegal drugs, they kill FAR MORE people than illegal drugs do.
If we, as a society, are going to decide that people should have liberty to eat McDonald’s and get heart disease, drink and kill themselves in a car accident, smoke and kill themselves with lung cancer, then we should let them have the liberty to do partake of other illicit substances that are, statistically, far less dangerous. If we are really going to hold life precious to the degree that we need to protect people from themselves, then fast food and cigarettes should be next on the list to criminalize.
