Your triglyceride levels are usually measured along with your cholesterol levels, which is where the issue can get confusing. Triglycerides are similar to cholesterol, but they are not the same. The two are different substances and are used in different ways inside the body. Cholesterol is used, for example, to build cell walls and manufacture certain hormones whereas, triglycerides are fats that provide your body with energy. To check the lipid levels in your blood, you’ll want to ask your doctor to perform a blood test called a lipid profile. This test will reveal your total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This is a fasting test, meaning you should not have by anything by mouth except water for 9 to 12 hours before having your blood drawn. Otherwise the test will yield lipid readings that can be misleading. After reading your blood test results, your doctor will tell you if your triglyceride levels fall into a healthy range: Normal is less than 150 mg/dL Borderline high is 150 to 199 mg/dL High is 200 to 499 mg/dL Very high is 500 mg/dL or greater.
